Arm lift is also known by the term Brachioplasty. It is a cosmetic surgical procedure to reshape the unaesthetic and saggy looking upper arm skin. Drooping and sagging of upper arm skin can occur in individual who has lost excessive weight, growing older leading to loss of skin elasticity. Due to the presence of flabby hanging skin it is referred to as “Bat wing” appearance.
Arm lift surgery is usually done under general anesthesia and the procedure takes around 2-3 hours depending upon the amount of the tissue to be removed. Initially liposuction is done to suck out the excess fat all around the upper arm and to give definition to the upper arm. After this the skin incision is made extending from elbow to armpit over the inner aspect of upper arm so that the final scar remains hidden. The excessive skin and fatty tissue are excised and wound is closed meticulously with absorbable suture. It may sometime be required to excise the skin from the hidden area of armpit and side of chest wall for achieving smooth contour.
Once the procedure is completed the arm is dressed and bandaged. There may be some bruising and swelling with some discomfort following the surgery. A compression garment will need to be worn to keep check over the swelling. Pain and discomfort usually subside within a week to 10 days’ time and one can resume routine light activities after 10 days. Suture if any will be removed after 2 weeks. Swelling may take up to 4-6 weeks for complete resolution.
In order to achieve the toned and contoured upper arm, one has to accept the scar on inner side of the upper arm.
